December in Istanbul looks festive, but not for the reason most senders assume. The lights along İstiklal, the trees in hotel lobbies, the decorated shop windows, nearly all of it goes up for 31 December. Christmas Day is an ordinary working day in Turkey. New Year's Eve, yılbaşı, is the night families gather, cook, stay up together and exchange gifts. If you are ordering flowers for someone in Istanbul this winter, that single fact usually changes the date you should choose.
If you are spending New Year in Istanbul, flowers can be delivered to your hotel, see send flowers to a hotel in Istanbul. For a home address, use our same-day flower delivery in Istanbul page.
Which date to choose
For a Turkish recipient, 31 December is almost always the right delivery date. The evening window, 18:00 to 22:00, puts the arrangement on the table before guests arrive, while an afternoon delivery gives the household time to place it. For an expatriate, a foreign colleague or a mixed family, 24 or 25 December may still be the meaningful date, and because those are normal working days in Turkey, we deliver then exactly as on any other day, including Sundays. 1 January is a public holiday in Turkey, and we deliver then too, on the same nine windows. After a late night most households wake up slowly, so a midday or afternoon window suits that day better than the first morning slot.
What to send
A Turkish New Year table is a full one, so an arrangement that competes with the food rarely works. Compact vase pieces, red and white roses, and white orchids all sit well on a laid table. If the gift is meant to last past the night itself, a potted plant is the better call, our plants and orchids stay presentable long after cut stems have gone over, which matters when the recipient goes straight into a week of visits.
Ordering from abroad in the busiest fortnight of the year
Our same-day cutoff is 18:00 Istanbul time, which is 15:00 in London and 16:00 in Paris or Berlin, and the cutoff guide explains why that catches out so many evening orders. Late December is the one stretch of the year when we would push you further than that: book a fixed date two or three days ahead rather than relying on same day, because florists and couriers across the city are at their busiest. Give the full address with apartment and floor, as covered in our neighbourhood guide, since a building door in December is a slower thing to solve than any distance across the city.
Prices are shown in euros, pounds or dollars as well as lira, and you pay in the currency you see, as explained in paying in euros or lira. For what a typical arrangement costs at each budget, see our Istanbul flower price guide. Before the arrangement leaves the workshop we photograph it and send you the photo on WhatsApp, so you see what will arrive on the New Year table even from another country.
