A Turkish Custom Foreign Business Partners Rarely Know About: The Grand-Opening Flower Stand

If a supplier, partner or colleague in Turkey tells you they're opening a new shop, restaurant or office, and you're used to sending a card or an email, you're about to miss a genuinely visible local custom. In Turkey, a business opening is marked with an açılış çiçeği, literally an "opening flower", a tall standing arrangement on its own stand, usually with a wide ribbon printed with the sender's name stretched across the front.

What it actually looks like

These aren't table arrangements, they're floor-standing displays, often over a metre and a half tall, built on a wire or foam frame and lined up outside the new business on opening day. For a well-connected opening, a dozen or more of these stands can run down the length of the street, each one a public, readable record of who showed up to support the new venture.

Why the ribbon is the actual point

The flowers matter less than the banner. Unlike a card that's read once in private, the ribbon sits outside all day, visible to every customer, neighbour and passer-by, which is exactly why sending one carries real business weight here, it's a public statement of the relationship, not a private one. Suppliers, business partners, family, and sometimes local officials for a prominent opening, are the typical senders.
